The elephant safari at Abu Camp is a very intimate, hands-on experience. By the end of the 3 days guest will know the herd by name and will be able to recognize them individually.
Nights are spent at Abu Camp. Each day brings a new activity with the elephant herd.
The Safari
Day 1: Arrive at Abu in a light aircraft where you will be met by our guides. The Camp is a short drive from the airstrip and you may even spot some of your first animals on the way there. The drive takes you along islands and the infamous log bridge that leads to Abu Island.
After tea you will experience your first meeting with the elephants, where you will be introduced to the herd and their handlers. This is followed by a short introductory ride with the herd, staying in close proximity of the Camp. On return to the Camp, sundowners are enjoyed while watching a breathtaking African sunset. Dinner is then served followed by fireside stories.
Day 2: The new day begins with an early start, a light breakfast is served and the day lies ahead with the promise of things yet to be discovered. A two hour elephant ride follows breakfast. Animals are spotted and the bush is interpreted by the mahouts. Traveling with the herd is an experience like no other. Before moving on to the game drive we serve bush tea and enjoy a lecture under a marula tree. Elephants take the guests back to the camp, on a slow relaxing journey through the bush, allowing guests to take in the wonderful African scenery.
Day 3: Day three heralds another early start with breakfast followed by a long ride out into the wilds of Africa. The aim is to track big game, but guests will see that being part of the herd is a fun filled and awe inspiring experience. After the ride, a bush tea is served while an interesting talk by one of our resident elephant researchers is given in the shade of the marula trees. It’s back to camp for lunch, followed by a few hours rest and relaxation around the camp’s swimming pool. After tea we get ready for a late afternoon ride with the elephants, followed by sundowners and champagne around the fire.
Day 4: A final photo shoot with all the mahouts and elephants rounds off an amazing safari and life changing experience.
Pleas note: This itinerary should be used as a guideline.
We accommodate 8 guests at a time on the elephants and thus some guests will ride and the others will walk with the elephants and then guests swap.
